Blatent Advertising

Its not often that a site blows me away with what they carry and the friendlyness of the site.  But as I was browsing for some tortoise food, which if I hadn't lost my updates you would know of my current food experiments.   But I found a site http://www.reptilesupply.com/index.php that offers a wide range of products for tortoises and reptiles.  Another site that has great information and some unique tortoise products is http://www.turtlecafe.com.  Reason I'm posting the blatent advertising for those two sites, is that next to the I think my tortoise is sick questions I get by email my second highest is where can I get X for my tortoise.  Usually I email back petsmart, petco or to just check there local petstore but occasionaly like around here the petstore may not carry what you are looking for or be outrageously priced.  Even with shipping and handling the Zoomed Grassland tortoise diet I bought today was cheaper than my local petstore.

Tortoise Diet Experiment:

I have been experimenting with my tortoises diet lately.  Since it has been winter and winter food for me and those in the northern sections of the US have trouble finding food that doesn't cause massive pyramiding issues.  As some of you regulars have seen pictures of my tortoises you will know that Taz is quite pyramided.  Even having spent a year on Mauzuri tortoise diet and what ever was growing in the yard he still shows quit a bit of pyramiding.  This winter since it was the first winter i've had him back after having him spend a year with a good friend who watched him while I was nomadic and in search of a new place to live due to a messy divorce.  Quick side note on divorce yes this is going to seem bizarre but you should have an understanding of the ownership of your tortoise.  Because I've seen a couple divorces thankfully not mine where the tortoises needed to be sold or were sold by the ex spouse for money sometimes at rock bottom prices in retaliation of the divorce.  However, I first tried the Mazuri diet and had mixed results.  I then tried the Monster Tortoise Diet by zeigler foods.  I then tried a mixture of the Mazuri and Monster Tortoise Diet.  So far is Mazuri has caused lots of constipation and led to a increase in the number of soakings per week.  The Monster led to loose fecals and also very smelly fecals.   Energy levels were high with the monster more sedate with the Mazuri the mixing of the two didn't make much improvement.  However so far after one 15oz container of the Zoomed grassland tortoise diet I can say i'm a fan of it.  I use to be very against the packaged diets but that was also 5+ years ago.  During the past 5 years there have been tremendous advances and studies done to develop these foods.  That and the Zoomed Grassland Tortoise diet is basicaly dried everything i would feed outside with considerably less mess than say straight hay with a spring mix salad.  So my experiments continue and again will update the care guide with my findings again and hopefully not lose them this time. Darn Skript kiddies..

Sick Tortoise

Don't know how many times I've heard, I think my tortoise is sick. If you think your tortoise is sick get it to the vet right away!!! Tortoises are very fragile especially juveniles when it comes to sickness. Below is a link of vets specializing in reptiles and exotic. Use them as a guide, but find a qualified vet that knows the difference between a Sulcata and a Leopard Tortoise.
